Many people all over the world are in recovery from drug and/or alcohol abuse. In a recent article on the Medium website, recovery expert Victoria Doramus relates her own life-changing experiences with recovery from addiction.
According to IMDB, after developing problems with cocaine and the amphetamine Adderall, Victoria Doramus attended her first in-patient rehab center in 2011. She spent 45 days learning about herself and how to acquire and use ‘tools’ of sobriety, then moved back to where she was living in Los Angeles.
Although she left the rehab center with more knowledge regarding herself and addiction, Ms. Doramus did not fully grasp that she had a disease that would require constant effort on her part to recover from. As is frequently the case, Victoria Doramus had to hit rock bottom and lose virtually everything before she could begin her own recovery on a serious level.
Trying to find a ‘geographical cure’ by moving to other states, even to London, England, didn’t put an end to Victoria’s addiction issues. What it took for her to get on the right track was a seven-month stay at a hardcore, 12-Step-oriented rehab program in Austin, Texas.
Now living in New York City, Victoria Doramus is an active member of AA, and is also actively working with several other non-profit groups that deal with addiction-related issues. Victoria maintains a goal of opening a halfway house for people who want to get sober, and she works hard every day to remain humble and moving in the right direction.
When it comes to giving advice to other people, Victoria Doramus urges people to be honest with themselves and others. This recovery expert believes that change is possible for everyone, but a person has to truly be willing to change their old behaviors. See her closer on Tradesy.
